Black History Month has begun, and throughout the month of February we will be highlighting and recognizing the important role Black Performers play in the adult industry. First up, we have Rhyheim Shabazz. He recently launched Voyr.com, a brand-new gay premium site that features a diverse roster of untapped Models trending on the most popular social media and creator-focused platforms. He also took home the award for Performer of the Year last week at GayVN 2024. In a short time, Rhyheim has accumulated over 24.4 million video views on PornhubGay and has an array of excellent advice to give new and accomplished Models. Read on to learn what he has to say!
You have taken PornhubGay by storm since joining as a verified Professional Model earlier this year! But let’s back up a little bit. First, tell us how you got started in the adult industry.
I had been filming my sexual encounters for months before someone suggested I do fan content. I did not even know that X (formerly Twitter) existed the way that it does. I thought it was solely tweets from public figures. Then my eyes were opened. Totally wide-eyed!
You have been uploading a variety of content, including short videos and long videos; what strategies do you employ to maximize engagement and keep your fans coming back for more?
I think it is good to mix things up as much as possible. The best way to gain follower/subscriber trust is to show them exactly what you have to offer. I try to add full older movies and nice sized clips from newer scenes. I also do photo dumps when I can even though I hate taking photos. I think that variety is key.
What was the first moment in your career where you said to yourself, “I’ve made it!”?
I think this occurred during my exclusivity with Tim Tales in my first year. The scenes were doing well, and I was gaining a lot of exposure that was a bit different from what I had received via my fan platforms and social media.
Last year you launched your own studio, VOYR. What led to your decision to branch out of performing and start producing?
I am constantly reminding myself not to become complacent with any kind of success or growth. I always preferred the creative/business aspect of the industry so I began planning for my retirement from performing whenever that day should come. Having my first X (formerly Twitter) account suspended at 1.2 million followers also created an urgency with the realization that I was being dependent on platforms that were out of my control. I wanted to build and work through something that is my own.
In just a few months you have accumulated over 24.4 million video views on Pornhub. What advice do you have for Models starting out on Pornhub and how would you recommend leveraging Pornhub’s traffic to maximize their brand growth?
Do not be stingy. We are constantly working on new content, so no harm will be done in being generous with older content. I would simply say, “share, share, share!”
You filmed with some incredible co-stars! What do you look for in Models you work with?
Most importantly, I try to avoid models that engage in online drama. The adult industry is still a business, so I gravitate towards people who are on top of their content, conscious of whom they work with, are reliable, and have the potential for growth. As I make my exit from performing, it is nice to know that I have a hand in making the next generation of creators/performers bigger and better!
Who are three Models you loved working with this past year and why?
I have my Brazilian crew that are always a pleasure: Gael, Andy Rodrigues, and Mr. Banana. It is a delight when I get the chance to work with my partner, Elijah Zayne, since we are so in sync. Then there are three titans that I was finally able to work with Alejo Ospina, Timothy Champagne, and Diego Mineiro.
What is your favorite country to film content in and why?
Definitely Brazil. The atmosphere here alone is sexy. The guys here take their work seriously because it really is about survival and opportunity. In Brazil, the relationship between creators is like family. When we have a visitor from elsewhere, we welcome them like family. There is more of an effort to make everyone succeed, not just in this business but in life.
Describe to us your perfect weekend! What keeps you active in your free time?
My perfect weekend would be no social media. Just all 4 of my dogs with my boyfriend and I. Hiking, frisbee at the park, and spending time by or in the pool. And lots of ordering in!
Tell us about your career goals; what would you like to accomplish in the next year?
In the next year I would like to simply phase out my career as a performer and focus on making my new site VoyR a success. Also, gain as much knowledge and wisdom in the process as possible. Learning is never ending.
Will your fans be lucky enough to catch you at any upcoming expos or events?
I am super shy and a hermit, so I do not go out much. However yes, I went to AVN and XBIZ LA last month… And I might attend a few more this year!
Who were the adult content creators that inspired you to start? Who are the creators that inspire you to keep going?
Since I feel as though I kind of fell into the industry without expectations, I would be lying if I said that anyone inspired me to start. However, there are a few folks who impressed me; Tiger Tyson, Cody Cummings, Francois Sagat, Bobby Blake, and most of the talent from Machofucker.
It is impossible to give a list of names because I tend to draw motivation and inspiration from so many, some whom I have yet to meet or work with. Anyone that shows a sense of professionalism, respect for their contemporaries and craft, discipline, and innovation deserves a spot on the list.
