Meet The Real Roxy Fox, who has been giving you the sex education you wish you had before you became sexually active! The former yoga teacher and dominatrix has been uploading videos that enlighten viewers on a myriad of topics covering jerk off instructions (JOI), bedroom confidence, female orgasms, and more. For World Sexual Health Day today, we linked up with Roxy Fox to talk about the importance of living a sexually healthy life.
Sex education is super important to a healthy society and sometimes it gets pushed aside or not taught at all. What initially attracted you to becoming a sex educator? How and when did you get started?
I always loved talking about sex, breaking taboos, and helping those around me lose their shame around that topic. It took many years and a long, winding road to get where I am today. In my twenties I was a yoga teacher living in Thailand and travelling the world. When I turned 30, I decided to move to London, which ended up causing a lot of mental distress and eventually led to a year of sexual abstinence and becoming a dominatrix. Around this time, I started a sex blog where I wrote about my extraordinary stories with unrelenting honesty and vulnerability – from gang bangs to abortion, my hippie life in Thailand, London sex work, and the dark world of BDSM. Eventually I started a YouTube channel and an OnlyFans, and after years of creative work, strong experiences and harsh lessons, everything I had gone through started making sense and merged into the creation of my brand, Roxysdream.
Today is World Sexual Health Day. How does sex education improve the quality of life and safety of adults?
Without the right sex education, it is impossible to understand ourselves and our partners and therefore have fulfilling (sex) lives. But more importantly, as great and pleasurable as sex can be, it can cause a lot of damage both physically and mentally without the right education. Learning about consent, about respect and about safe sex can prevent lasting trauma and the spread of diseases. With education and mindfulness, we learn what is right and wrong, what we really want, the consequences of our behaviors, and how to express our needs and boundaries.
Let's talk about your advocacy work. You regularly make donations from your earnings to an organization called Back to Life. How does global activism contribute to community growth?
Yes, I am donating to women and children in need in Nepal as well as to a dog shelter in Thailand. I believe in kindness and generosity. When I was younger and didn't have money, I worked in a refugee camp on the Thai-Burmese border, and it was one of the most fulfilling things I have ever done. Later, when I started earning more money, I decided to share it with those in need. I believe that my success is partly because of this attitude. When you give and share, you will get more in return! I hope I can spread the message of love and kindness in my videos, even though porn might be the last place you'd expect to find that.
Your generosity is inspiring! Do you think there is a direct correlation between sexual and mental health?
Absolutely. Sex is the strongest force and power there is. Sex creates life. Our confidence, how satisfied we are, whether we feel loved and appreciated, it all depends primarily on our sex life. We can become addicted to masturbation or sex, feel shame or guilt around the topic and our bodies, or wonder why we are never satisfied despite plenty of orgasms. So, having a healthy relationship to sex and our bodies can help us thrive while having an unhealthy one can cause a lot of problems.
Speaking of that, your videos cover a wide range of topics. How do you choose what to discuss in your videos and what is your process for gathering the information?
I have been teaching sex education for over 5 years and I don’t seem to run out of topics. Sometimes friends or fans request certain things, or I get the same questions asked until I decide to cover the topic in a tutorial. Besides that, I mainly teach what I want to talk about. Sometimes I focus more on men, sometimes women, other times sexual health and then again on BDSM or pleasure. It depends on my mood and the life phase I am in. And because I always really feel like talking about those topics, the videos are fun and authentic. They are never forced, and it never really feels like work either.
For many people, sex education begins with exploring their own body. In our 2023 Year in Review Insights, JOI (jerk off instructions) was in the top 30 searches in the United States. How has JOI content contributed to your brand growth?
Making JOI videos gave me the opportunity to change people's masturbation behavior and the way they use porn. I quickly realized that this was a way to help people move towards more mindful masturbation. Soon I included yoga and meditation and basically created a new category of porn that I am proud of and that many people have become admirers of. My JOI videos became a healthy alternative to traditional porn, and I got a more curious group of people following me that wanted to learn, grow and evolve.
What is your most popular video topic? Is there something specific your fans gravitate towards?
My most popular topic is "how to make girls cum” – from squirting and g-spot to vaginal and clitoral orgasms. Men want to become better lovers, whether it is for their reputation, their ego, or to actually pleasure women. At the end of the day, a lot of women are indirectly profiting from my tutorials and that makes me really happy!
What is your filming process like? Walk us through how you edit your content, choose thumbnails, and how often you upload new videos.
I only film when I feel motivated, and I do exactly what I feel like. Sometimes that is a JOI, sometimes a tutorial, and other times a sensual or artistic video. I choose a beautiful background (I like soft colors or nature) with good lighting and set up my camera. Then I take care of myself – shower, massage coconut oil on my body, and get into the right mood. I must be in top form for the video to be good. Maybe that means being naked and sensual or it could mean dressing up as Miss Fox. I edit my JOI videos myself but have a great editor for my sex tutorials who also makes the thumbnails for me.
Aside from sex education, you also mentioned you work as a dominatrix. Do you see that as another opportunity to educate people or is it strictly pleasure focused?
I used to work as a dominatrix but stopped a few years ago. Now, being a new mom and having different priorities, I highly doubt I will ever step foot into that realm again (which doesn't mean I don’t miss it). From those experiences, I now educate people and share my knowledge and within that, focus on how to roleplay in a mindful, caring and safe way.
When you are not busy teaching us about sex ed, what do you like to do in your spare time?
As I mentioned, I just became a mom, and I am absolutely smitten and in love with my son. Every moment that I am not working, I spend with him. We sail around the Mediterranean sea in my catamaran, go for walks, or just cuddle. Soon I will start travelling again, hopefully to South America and my favorite city in the world, New York City.
Tell us about your goals for the next 1-3 years. What do you hope to accomplish?
I am currently writing a book about my journey healing from an abusive relationship and being a happy, single mum. The plan is to write more, focus on my podcast again, and hopefully have my own TV show one day. I'm dreaming big, but that's what you must do to become successful!
